Learn to use the computer in connection with writing and recording. The computer continues to be more and more important to the average musician. Learn how to put complete songs from start to end using just your computer! FL studio (formerly known as Fruityloops) is a fully featured sequencing program - the major competitor to Propellerhead's Reason. Computer composition is simple with this user friendly program, yet complex enough to satisfy professional musicians.
Here are some examples I have done in my lessons:
Clocks - a remake of the popular song by Coldplay, using nothing but sounds within the program.
Am Jam - a loop I create to practice soloing on guitar.
ChoirBeat - another jam I created to use for guitar soloing. Check out the violins towards the end.
Fruitysong 9 - Another example of what FL studio can do with the sounds included in the program. I like the drums in this one
GuitarGroove - This example was created using FL studio and ProTools together. The lo-fi guitar was recorded separately with protools and then put in with the rest of the song.
FL studio and Special Needs
One thing I love about FL studio is how it can open up the world of music and creative expression to those who would find it difficult or impossible otherwise. I have had a few students with physical handicaps that would prevent them from excelling at traditional instruments.
